Expository writing is a well-organized form of academic writing that writers use to inform their readers. Unlike creative writing, expository writing is based on factual details and has a basic format, which is made up of an introduction, a thesis, main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Under the umbrella of expository writing, there are several distinctive essay patterns, including enumeration-description, time sequence, explanation-process, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect.
Be Descriptive
Enumeration-description essays consist of descriptive details about a particular subject or topic. In this style of composition, the writer gives description by listing information, such as characteristics, examples, and features. For instance, the use of examples is very common because it allows writers to make statements and present relevant cases that support their claims. Thus, the audience learns the writer’s point of view and carefully examines its validity.
Use Time Order
Time sequence essays are composed of information submitted in chronological fashion. By listing items or events in numerical or chronological order, the writer conveys a message to the reader. This kind of essay is useful in presenting material that occurs sequentially. Writers often utilize cue words, such as first, second, and third, to help the reader understand the timing of events that are presented.
Show Process Steps
Explanation-process essays refer to the use of steps to describe an action or event. The writer creates a process pattern that explains an act that is carried out in an orderly fashion. For example, an article about constructing or making something is often found in process expositions. From this article, the audience can learn how to follow directions and create an object, like a model airplane.
Compare and Contrast Ideas
Comparison and contrast essays are forms of writing that find the similarities and differences about two things. To fully comprehend a subject, writers often need to compare and contrast two things, like a degree in law and a degree in medicine. Therefore, this style of writing is useful because it helps to clarify characteristics of materials, concepts, or ideas.
Explain Cause and Effect Relationships
Cause and effect essays are made up of lists that identify the causes of a phenomenon and the resulting effects. In cause and effect essays, writers attempt to tell why something occurs and, then, they give the results of the occurrence. In cause essays, writers discuss why something has occurred. On the other hand, in effect essays, writers explain what will happen as a result of an event.
Create a Learning Experience
Writing exposition involves careful planning and organization. Once you know the type of pattern you will use, be sure to follow the correct essay format. Because expository writers never assume that the reader knows their subject, they always aim to teach it. Writing good expository essays, therefore, requires knowledge of your subject and the desire to create a learning experience.
